The Five Year Outlook for the Global OCTG Industry - Expert guidance and vital business knowledge

Metal Bulletin Research has in January 2012 newly published a study called The Five Year Outlook for the Global OCTG Industry. This study is a five-year outlook of the global market for OCTG tubing and casing to 2016. It explores historic and forecast production and trade and consumption on a by-country, by-region and global basis. It provides analysis on tubular connections, grades, production costs and corporate activity. This study is estimated to cover 95% of global consumption and 100% of production. MBR estimates that casing and tubing consumption in the countries covered in this study stood at 14.5 million tonnes in 2010, of which 11 million tonnes were seamless and 3.6 million tonnes were welded. This is a sharp increase compared with 7.4 million tonnes in 2003, of which 2 million tonnes were welded and 5.4 million tonnes were seamless. However, it is well below the peak of 14.9 million tonnes in 2008, although this year’s figure included a significant inventory accumulation. In 2009, there was a decline in global demand by 30%; in 2010, consumption rebounded, growing 33%. We estimate it will grow by a further 14% in 2011.

The largest market for global OCTG consumption in 2010 was the Nafta region, which accounted for 36%. China accounted for 27%; the CIS 13%; Latin America 8%; and the Middle East 7%. Africa consumed 4%, closely followed by other Asia at 3% and the EU 27 at 2%. In terms of welded tubing and casing, Nafta is even more dominant. It accounts for 67% of total global consumption of the material. Conversely, it only consumes around 25% of global seamless casing and tubing output. Production does not correspond geographically with consumption; Nafta is the largest importer, while Africa and the Middle East have very limited production. China, Japan, Europe and Latin America all produce more than they consume.
