SMS group signs MoU with PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk to drive green steel development initiatives in Indonesia

As part of their partnership, SMS group
and PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk co-hosted a two-day ‘Focus Group Discussion (FGD)’ event in Jakarta, Indonesia. Under the banner of ‘Green Steel in the Digital Age: A Focus Group Exploring Carbon Footprint Reduction,’ this ground-breaking event brought together key stakeholders in the Indonesian steel industry.
The event saw the signing of a memoran- dum of understanding (MoU) between SMS and GRP, symbolizing their commitment to advancing sustainable steel industry proce- dures and processes through digital solu- tions.
Argo Sangkaeng, President Director of GRP, expressed his enthusiasm for the collabora- tion, stating, “We are very enthusiastic about hosting this FGD event with SMS, and we believe that this collaboration will bring posi- tive changes to the Indonesian steel industry. We hope to explore innovative and sustaina- ble solutions that will help reduce the envi- ronmental impact of steel production.”
Eminent speakers at the event included Tim Kleier, Head of Green Steel at SMS, who
shared insights into pioneering decarbon- ization strategies and the implications of
the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) for the industry, emphasizing the pathway toward a greener and more sustain- able steel sector. Lis Soares, Head of Energy Management at SMS, explored strategies
for quantifying and mitigating carbon emis- sions in steel production while navigating the complex landscape of carbon taxes. Addition- ally, Bernhard Steenken, Co-Chief Sales Officer India & Asia Pacific at SMS group, elucidated green technologies aimed at curtailing carbon emissions in steel production. He went on to say, “We are delighted to participate in this Focus Group Discussion together with GRP. We believe that this collaboration will have a significant positive impact on the steel indus- try in Indonesia. This event provides a valu- able opportunity to explore innovative and sustainable solutions that will help reduce the environmental impact of steel production.”
Over the course of the two-day event, this initiative served as a pivotal platform for exchanging of knowledge and experience among stakeholders who share a deep commitment to environmental concerns. It will strengthen collaboration among industry players, fostering united efforts to reduce the domestic steel sector’s carbon footprint.
